The signature combination of Lord Elphinstone (1869-1955) and William Watson (1902-1984) as Governor and Treasurer of the Bank of Scotland respectively, covered just Seven date issues, between September 1953 and March 1955.
Six of the dates maintain the usual(for that time) print run of 1,000,000 notes per date, with the exception of the first date of September 4 1953, with only 500,000 notes being printed.
1955 saw the Bank of Scotland take over the Union Bank of Scotland, at the same time the formerly grey medallion in the centre became a blue-grey, and the reverse adopted a sailing ship motif in the central medallion, in honour of the Union Bank.
The banknotes continued to be printed by Waterstons. Once the remaining paper supplied by Portals was exhausted, subsequent supplies were sourced from Cowans of Penicuik.
In replying to a question in the House of Commons, the then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan stated that the average male wage in April 1955 was £10. 17s. 5d (£10.87p), meaning that for many, a £1 note was probably the highest denomination in the wage packet.
