The need for small change resulted in the issuing of Farthing denominations, by the St John, Antigua, merchants Hannay and Coltart, whose company was founded C.1836.
Between being settled by the English in 1632 and 1822, Spanish and French colonial coinage had circulated. From 1822 to 1847, "Anchor" money in fractions of a Spanish Dollar arrived, followed by supplies of English copper and silver.
Until 1847 £1 Sterling traded at the local rate of £2.25 "Antiguan", when standard sterling was applied. The copper Farthings are denominated in Sterling, suggesting the mintage was 1847 or after, as far as is known, mintage figures are not available.
